This weekend two well known and popular Demons, Tim Wales and Evan Danilo, play their 150th open-age game for the Pennant Hills Demons.
Between these two players, they have a total of five premierships for Penno; two for Waler and three for Big Ev. Both of them won their 100 game milestone matches in 2016. For Waler, it was in the Round 12 Premier Division match against Western Suburbs played in front of a home crowd at Mike Kenny Oval. Penno won the day by 51 pts and Waler was adjudged second best for the Demons. The game was also notable for the work done by Penno’s powerhouse forward duo, Theo Moraitis and Nick Hey. That day, Nick took the honours, kicking 7 goals and Morro backed him up with 4 goals of his own. These two spearheads will also be key to the Demon’s success this year. Morro has been at the top of the competition goal kicking ladder for most of this season; by Round 11 he had kicked 44 goals, 7 goals ahead of his nearest rival. Also in 2016, Waler was Premier Division’s R/U Best & Fairest, finishing second to Matt Thomas who won his second Ern Holmes Medal that year.
Waler’s first grade debut was under Coach Kevin Eynaud in Round 8, 2010 up against East Coast Eagles at Bruce Purser Reserve (aka Kanebridge Oval). The Demons went down by 57 pts that day, against a very strong Eagles side. Penno finished in 5th place after the H&A rounds and the 3rd placed Eagles eventually went on to win the 2010 flag. Prior to their elevation to the NEAFL in 2012, the Eagles were a powerhouse club, completing a three-peat of flags between 2009 and 2011. Fast forward a few years, and Waler became a member of the Premier Division premiership sides of 2015 and 2017. On both occasions the Demons were rated as rank Underdogs! Penno beat the Eagles, who had just returned to the Sydney competition, in 2015, and then won against a Sydney University side flush with NEAFL talent in 2017. In the 2017 GF, Waler kicked the opening goal of the match.
Waler has worn jumper #16 for most of his career at Penno, since 2012. However, before him, Alex ‘Cheese’ Goodall was the owner of #16. Waler says “... I’m pretty sure I [originally] wore #14 and it wasn’t until the start of the 2012 season that I switched to #16, which was originally Cheese’s number. The reason for this was that Cheese was carrying a few extra kilos than usual after a BIG off-season and didn’t fit into the #16 which was a size L (large). #14 was an XL (extra large), so we did a swap and I have had #16 ever since!”
Evan’s 100 game milestone coincided with the Division Five Grand Final in 2016, won by the Demons by 11 pts. Jarrod Myers kicked five goals in the final and was adjudged Best on Ground for his match-winning performance. Evan was also a member of the victorious 3rd grade side in 2013 which won the Division Four Flag that year and he made it three flags last season playing in the Division One side that won in a memorable come-from-behind performance. Evan kicked a goal in each of the 2013 and 2018 GFs and was also named BoG in 2013. In 2017 he was R/U Best & Fairest for the Demon’s third grade side.
On behalf of everyone at Pennant Hills we wish Waler and Big Ev the best of luck for their milestone matches and congratulate them on this magnificent achievement!
Go Penno!
