PHAFL Sydney AFL Penno Newsletter Round 13

ROUND 13 – Breast Cancer Awareness Success

From the President

The inaugural clubs Breast Cancer Awareness Round, raising funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation was held in the clubrooms this round. What an awesome achievement led by Laura Donohoe, raising in excess of $12,000.00.

The Premier Women and Men teams stood out playing the Breast Cancer Awareness strips. These were sold as part of the fundraising efforts. Silent auctions, raffles and donations were running for a number of weeks leading up to and on the day. Many of us have had women we know and their families impacted by this disease. Thank you to all for you work and support of this great cause.

PHAFL Sydney AFL Toyota Good For Footy Raffle

Congratulations to Josh Mott on Achieving life membership as a player with 150 games this round. An outstanding achievement to someone who has also put  a lot back into the club being a previous President and mentoring younger players.

The Good For footy Raffle will be closing soon and we need a big push on this. Remember the team raising the most funds will share 10% of their funds raised so be that team. Tickets are only $5.00 each with a chance to win one of three new Toyota motor vehicles. Importantly all funds raised go directly to our club. This is our major fundraiser and important to our yearly financial position. We have reached $3,350.00 of or $15,000.00 target. Please take your teams code to work, to friends and family and get them to buy.

Premier Division Men Vs Inner West Magpies
(PH 11.13.79 Defeated IWM 6.5.41)

Saturday saw us play the red-hot Inner Wests Magpies, on the back of 5 straight wins. We would welcome back in key players Mikey Carroll & Cooper Lee for a pivotal top 3 game, with both teams locked on wins (3 v 4). The day would have extra importance being our reigning dual best & fairest winner and Co-captain Mitchell Blow’s 100th senior game, remarkable effort for a 24 yr old.

The first 3 quarters were a battle, it was super contested, tough, low scoring. Wests did well to limit our fire power until the last quarter, we were able to move the ball more freely and walk away with a 38-point win. The ruck battle was a key one, with 2 of the premier rucks of the comp going head to head, with Mitchell Blow getting on top. Our mids were super all day, lead by Boag, Edmonds & Wray. Connor Matthews did a great job shutting down one of the best forwards of the comp, Lachley Willey was huge in attack & defence, never loses a 1 v 1. Riley Hawes keeps getting better with 4 goals, Hey & Moraitis were massive up & down the ground. Overall a great team effort that keeps us 3rd.

We now have a well-deserved bye to freshen up before the run home.

We welcomed back 8 senior players into the team. For the first time this year we didn't have a first gamer coming into the team this week.

We started like a house on fire as the saying goes, we stopped their first shot on goal and took the ball from our back half into our forward half without the opposition touching the ball. Great first goal.

From then on, we were second to the ball and like last week the opposition set up at all ball ups and throws up/ins where they totally dominated the game. Our back half yet again was under a tremendous amount of constant pressure. You could tell the girls were constantly moving away from our structures.

Again we had a number of underage players in the team where Emmerson, Tara, Charlotte, Addison  and Cassidy stood tall. Cassidy kicking the first goal of the game. For a group of young players (TC and Addison don't turn 16 till later in the year) Well done to all.

At the half time break we discussed getting back to basics we took this advice and came away with 4 shots on goal to 7 against us in the 2nd half of football. This is a fantastic effort against a finals bound team. They also played with the maximum 44 points out of 44. We played with 27 of 44 points available to us.

After Charlotte took a heavy knock (no free was awarded and/or player reported!) we went to Jesse Smith to tag one of the competition best onballers - what a fantastic role you played Jesse. Thank you.

It was pleasing to watch Quinny take control for 4qtrs. over the leading goal kicker in SAFLW. It was the best full back in the comp v's the best full forward in the comp. You held her scoreless and better still played an offensive game that was terrific. Thank you Kaitlin. Your partner down back Haley Lowe was outstanding yet again, she was in everything fighting to spoil and/or get the ball out of the back half. It was the best game l have seen you play to date Haley. Congratulations

Another one of our stars Kaitlin Noble was tremendous overhead taking 4-5 contested marks through the shorten match time you played.

We have 5 games left for the season and l’m hoping we can be back to our best in these weeks. There are opportunities for everyone in a game of football but you either have to create them and/or take them when they present.  The choice is yours!

“Discipline, Structure, Trust, Confidence”

A lot of players out injured or away this week allowed for other players to shine today and explore different positions and thinking.  Our game plan was all about fluid ball movement and work rate.  Whilst we were on top of the contests in the first and second quarter there were signs of inefficiency – lots of forward entries but delivery and conversion was a bit sloppy.  By giving to the first clear player and sharing the ball around we wanted cleaner forward entries and scoring opportunities.

Bill and Harvey were changing in the ruck with Roman out and both did very well.  Jimmy was having impact at HF and our mids were winning the contests with Dyl, Robbo and Spida dominating at clearance.  But it was our kicking to our teammates that was letting us down.  And our constructive talk at stoppages needed some improvement.  We had to work harder than was necessary.  Este was solid down back at CHF, Zander was taking grabs and kicking goals, Cooper D was getting some leather poisoning, and Jack K’s elite ball use through the middle and out of the stoppage was excellent.

In the second half we rotated a lot of players – forwards to backs, rotated off the bench and put players in unfamiliar positions to give more players opportunities to shine.  We noticed an improvement in ball use and movement after half time, hitting our hot spots up forward more fluently and one touch footy.  Luka was smiling with goal scoring opportunities up forward as was Este who were both taking multiple clean marks.  Cooper D kicked his first goal for the season.  Ryan B whilst being managed with minor injuries was clean up forward.  The passages of ball movement became cleaner and more efficient as the game went on.  At one stage a great team goal finished by Luka was the result of winning a stoppage by Robbo, ball movement wide to Zander, then to Este and finally to Luka.  Looked terrific.

We are preparing now for the back half of our season and shaping our structures and game plan to produce the best quality team play possible.  Time to rest and prepare ourselves for this important time and some big games ahead.  Today showed we have great depth and flexibility – multiple payers capable of playing multiple roles – a very important team skill to recognise and embrace.  Be willing to explore new ideas and try new positions.  Have confidence, trust and faith and back each other in.

Congrats to our Club, our committee members, and Terry, Lindy and Laura Donohoe for the outstanding work in promoting and sharing Breast Cancer Awareness Round.  A super day to celebrate women’s footy with our teams running out in special pink jerseys.   Thank you for what you all continue to do.  Big thanks today to Pat, Toby and Jake for backing up and playing two games to field our teams.

Best players –

Cam Este – superb game at CHB then CHF for the second half where he was clean, took multiple marks and made great decisions with the ball.  Great game.

Cal Irish – best game of the year off the wing.  Won the 50/50s and was instrumental in driving the ball forward.  Well done.

Jimmy G – shows great skills and talent, can fly for the mark and kick well, clean hands, great ball user and finisher.  Never beaten today.

Cooper D – best game of the year.  Changing mid and half back.  Plenty of the ball and winning stoppages.

Zander – strong marking forward with influence and unselfish ball movement today.   Finished with 4 goals.

Dyl B – hard work done around the ground with his two way running and strength at stoppages.

Division 1 Men V Inner West Magpies
(PH 8.6.54 Defeated IWM 7.4.46)

First game of the day Saturday morning as we took on the Inner West Magpies. We had a few guys out, so we had to call in some old souls in Regan Pinker and Jesse Hare and first game for us Dom Pyne. Big thanks to them for the effort they all put in which helped us get over the line.

First quarter we started hot controlling the ball and creating great ball movement from our backline. A couple of dropped skills let the magpies score and keep them in the game giving us a 1-point lead heading into the first break.

Second quarter we started flat and struggled to impact the contest. Our skills were also an issue and we let Inner West get a run on taking a 6-point lead. We moved some things around to stem the bleeding and managed to slow down their impact, but we went into the halftime break deflated.

Third quarter was a close battle and both teams really attacked the ball hard kicking 3 goals each. Our backline was strong absorbing a lot of pressure but the strength from Swanny and his intercepting helped us massively. We were able to rebound the ball quickly through the corridor with the help of Wombats left foot.

Fourth quarter we over ran Inner West with our energy kicking 2.2 and keeping the Magpies scoreless. The sealing goal came from Snaglin on the boundary showing that left foot craft with an amazing snap. We came away with an 8-point win and some great energy heading into sing the club song. Was also great to see Preedy get a win on his first game back for the season and to see Ben Mathews running around out there after his European holiday.

Division 2 Women’s Match Report
Women’s Division 2 v Inner West Magpies
(PH 4.1.25 Defeated IWM 3.6.24)

Thanks to the persistent work of Stewart Woodward with the Council, we were able to finally have a game.  And it was not Raining.

Wests are sitting 2nd on the ladder but were down to 15 players, so an opportunity beckoned.

We got a great start, with Jazz leading our Mids of Kat, Georgia and Kate. Ciara also had a strong start with some good contests, and Bec and Sophie were doing their usual rebounds out of defence. It was an arm wrestle until Jazz nailed a monster kick from a freekick that went over everyone’s heads and allowed Sally to gather, steady and kick the first goal of the day.

We then went into qtr time with a one goal lead.

Wests started strong in the 2nd qtr with their Mids lifting the ante.  Despite good resistance from Ellie, Steph and Ali C, they were able to have multiple shots on goal which resulted in 2 goals. This could have been more if they had been more accurate. Bec App was pivotal in the first half, running hard to become an option, as well as ensuring our backs were organized. Joey and Jazz were taking it up to West’s big ruck, and were supported by Haylee and Mak, who had moved into the Mids and was having her best game of the year. The team continue to compete hard for the ball, and this persistence paid off with a late surge forward resulting in Sally kicking a goal on the siren.  We went into halftime 3 points down.

In the second half we moved Ellie D into the middle where she continued to have a big impact on the game. We were seeing hard work from Sammy and Catrin in the forward line, who despite being outnumbered all day due to Wests putting an extra player back, competed to hold the ball in and allowed us to score goal. Kellie, Christine and Louise were doing the same on the wings

In the 3rd qtr we saw the best play of the year from Sally who gathered in the forwards, broke clear, took a bounce (yes a bounce ), then did a Dusty fendoff to kick a great goal. WooHoo.

We went into the last break 6 points down.

In the last quarter, Jazz really stood up and led the Mids to really dominate the quarter. Ellie D, Kat and Geogia continued to be strong.  The team held Wests scoreless for the quarter with everyone contributing. We were able to score a point off the back of strong surges forward, and whilst we were dominating the game, it looked like we were going to run out of time. However, we got an opportunity after super work from Haylee (with a broken hand)  and Sammy held the ball in our forward line after a kick forward from Sally. This resulted in a ball up 20 mtrs out with 30 sec to go.  A tap down from Jazz saw Ellie D get possession. Some great evasive work and shepherds from the other forwards saw Ellie D kick truly to put us 1 point in front with 20 sec to go.

A Super Win and great reward for all the hard work at training.

Well Done All.

Men's Division 3 vs Southern Power
(PH 18.15.123 Defeated SP 2.3.15)

Round 13 saw our first appearance on the bottom deck at Greenway in season 2024.

A few changes in personnel saw an average age of 30 which has to be a record for a Div 3 team. Our on-ball division was able to get us off to a fast start with a goal within the first 60 seconds. From there on in we were able to dominate proceedings running out winners 18.15.123 to 2.3.15 in a game where we able to move the magnets around and try a few different positions.

Better players were Alex Vink on a wing who even broke his goalscoring drought seeing his tally now at 1.10 for the season, Anthony Brawn up forward who added a further 7 goals to his 2024 season, Kieran Wright & Dom Pyne on ball, Scott Chapman in the ruck who gave us first use all day whilst Jed Corbett was a clear standout with his clean use and silky skills on show for all to see.

Good result with 22 contributors.

Division 5 Men's Match Report with thanks to Conveyancing at Pittwater
Men’s Division 5 v East Coast Eagles
(PH 7.6.48 Loss to ECE 8.10.58)

All logic and the ladder suggested this would be a walk in the park for our dear close friends from East Coast who sat on top looking down on the rest of the competition including Pennant Hills in 7th, and had a stacked team made up of several higher grade players who had not played in this division all season.

This Demons group however is different gravy. Integrity is at the forefront of everything we do as a team and a club, and we prepared accordingly. We needed a bounce from our last time out (a +100 point loss) and we were celebrating the 150th game of Josh Mott.

Tommy Pellizzon stepped in and managed to grab an early goal together with that 150 man, Mr Mott. Sam Rice was exerting his growing confidence and ability (developed recently under the tutelage of Seb Parker and Wazza Atwell). Rice was not being bullied and defended his teammates whenever the need arose.

Our opponent kicked 4 straight to our 3:1 in the opening quarter and it really was game on.

The pressure was so great that our manager come runner needed treatment on his bulging calves before the quarter was out.

Q2 was equally tight despite continuing pressure from our opponents. Matt Rashleigh decided to dodge and weave like Chad Warner, and surprisingly, it came off. He was taking intercept marks, run and carry and exiting dangerous situations with class and poise. Nathan Cowell is growing in stature, reputation and confidence, and whilst the new ‘Chad’ was doing his thing, Nathan and Matty Miles held the back line  together stoutly.

PHAFC Mens Division 5

Will Engleman is new to the game and we love his energy and enthusiasm. Not much ball was coming his way and in Q3 he was given free rein to find the footy and cause havoc. He was rewarded with multiple touches and a smart goal. Helped by more Mott magic and goals from Pellizzon and Ducky Morris, we went into the final turn one point in front

What an amazing turnaround. Remember, this opponent planted multiple imports into this team desperately seeking some success for their club, against a team 6 places below them and made up with a mix of youth, experience, energy and sheer desire, yet here we were, giving it their all for our collective cause.

Hayden Mitchell and Boxy typified our endeavour and spirit by creating opportunities and executing their roles constantly. Luke Garment gave absolutely everything and was all cooked by 3/4 time, Tadhg Richards was done with a hammy, and Mitch Wall suffered what looks like a season ending broken ankle, not to mention our gallant man in pink who was still hobbling. Not an ideal way to start the last quarter.

We held our opponents to 1:6 in the final term but we could only manage 1 behind. Perhaps this reflects the effort from the first 3/4’s, but a large part was due to the class and ability of the aforementioned senior imported players. Credit where it’s due, they played well and deserved the win.

To my lads, if we maintain the rage and cohesiveness, we will achieve our personal and collective goals, I have no doubt. Believe!

I will see you in the next one.
