As previously reported in this column, our D5M team simply has to win every game to qualify for finals, but even if this group does not achieve that objective, we have certainly improved as a unit on a trajectory which has, frankly speaking, not been entirely expected. Hoped and dreamed for, yes, but not something that was automatically going to happen.
Two tremendous newcomers to our club, Jack Crampton and Adam Wagner set the tone early against this proud and strong North Shore club. Crampo was an emergency called in late Friday night, and Wags was the next emergency drafted in as Tadgh Richards strained his hammy in the warm-up (credit to Tadgh for his honesty and putting the team first). Wags was taking overhead marks for fun whilst Crampo was just using our opponents as rag dolls to toss around and spit out like a well mauled dog bone. This energy was capitalised upon when our own version of Blakey (the lizard), Mr Luke Bray, ran onto a ball 75 metres out, beat one, shrugged off another, straightened and kicked from 40m to score the first major.
The Plastics are well regarded and respected for their goal kicking accuracy and heading into the 2nd quarter we were well aware of this threat. Luke Richards has developed into a tremendous asset with his reading of the game and positioning on field. By his own reckoning, he has had a slight form dip, but this has been washed away with sensational performances in the last 2 matches. Against NS he was quick to set up our next goals for Ducky Morris and Joey who was electric after a few weeks off. Right on the stroke of 1/2 time, key forward and all-round (see what I did there) nice guy, Oskar Raue belted home our 3rd for the quarter as we kept the opponent scoreless.
This group of players have set a high bar for themselves and are aligned to a man with their determination to improve and support each other. They resolved at the main break to keep their foot firmly planted on the opponent’s throat and expel the last bit of oxygen from their lungs. Heaven help anyone who was going to stem the wave of desire from this group. Ryan Kelleher has been a revelation, and together with Geordie Dooley, TSL and a resolute backline of Acheson, Miles and Bloom, we piled on a further 5 goals to 1 in Q3. Sam Rice was tested, but worked in tandem with Sam Macauley who was returning from injury to dominate the midfield ruck contests and feed the mids who delivered wonderful service to Josh Mott and Ducky down forward.
Coaches often look for those 1% efforts that go unseen by many. Those contests off the ball, the unrewarded runs, the constant talking and leading, the quiet inspiration that drives others. This coach is blessed with players like Flynn Hume and Sam Hill and Cal Toohey who do so much for this team whilst not grabbing the headlines week in week out. It was these guys who were the backbone of our success in Q4, and we’re going to need every ounce of effort from them and the entire squad to see how far this team can go.
This momentous game was also a celebration of Nathan ‘Boxy’ Breen who was playing his 250th for our great club. Boxy is a multiple premiership winner, individual medal winner and a stalwart of this club. In all honesty, when I’m delivering a quarter or half time sermon to these players with Boxy in the group, I sometimes feel like a fraud - there is nothing I can tell Boxy that he hasn’t experienced or heard before. Yet, he continues in his own way to educate his players in a simple and direct method which invariably makes them better players. He educates for a profession and mentors in his leisure time both at Penno and the Sydney Cricket Club - it’s in his blood to help develop those who follow in his footsteps, and many players in this group will look back and be thankful for playing alongside Boxy. He has also made me a better coach. He challenges me with his thinking and experience, and encourages me to back myself whenever doubt creeps in. One day in the future, Boxy will transition to Masters footy and will no doubt continue on his path of helping others achieve their goals. But for meantime Boxy, you are most welcome to help build the next generation and leave a wonderful legacy. Thanks mate for all you have done and will hopefully continue to do for many years to come.
