Ely Smith was chosen at pick #21 in last nights 2018 NAB AFL Draft by the Brisbane Lions.
Smith earned his selection after strong performances for Vic Country at the Under 18 National Championships and the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup competition. At 187cm he is an agile, powerful, explosive ball winner, at home in the midfield.
His selection came as a surprise to Ely, and had to rush home from holidays overseas with his family to ensure he would be in the room on draft night to receive his first jumper from Jonathan Brown.
Ely joined junior club Westbrook at age 9, playing a total of 112 games, and later 13 for Pennant Hills in the 19’s team where he scored 4 goals.
