Last weekend, after a miraculous recovery from injury, Matt Miles played his 100th open-age game for the Demons.
Season 2022 is Matt’s 11th season of footy with the Pennant Hills senior club. He is 30 years old.
Matt’s whole footy career with the Demons spans more than two decades after starting out in Auskick at the Pennant Hills Juniors in 1996. He played 136 games at the junior club and was a member of back-to-back premiership sides in 2004 & 2005.
Matt has been a backman most of his career and has played mainly in the third and fourth grade sides. He is a reliable defender and aggressive tackler with an iron grip. He has sure hands, is a good mark and has a straight kick.
Matt’s time at the senior club started in 2008. He played 27 games in the Under 18s over two seasons. In 2011, he played two games in Reserve grade, then went missing for a couple of years. He returned to Penno in 2014 and was Division Three’s Most Improved that year. In 2016, he played in the victorious Division 5 premiership side and was the Most Consistent player. In 2019, he was again adjudged Most Improved in the Division Two (4rd grade) side.
Matt is the youngest son of former Demons premiership player, Rod Miles, who played with the Club during the 1970s and ‘80s and is still involved in 2022. Rod held the record for most games played at the Club for many years until 2003 and his tally of 233 still ranks him in the top ten. Veteran player, Anthony Brawn, is the Club’s current games record-holder with 385 games.
The Miles clan likely holds the record for most games played by a family – Rod (233 games), Uncle Warren (113), older brother Ben (226), and Matt (100) brings the family total to 672 open-age games for the Demons.
Matt is a respected member of the footy club, always puts the team first and is loyal to his teammates. He’s always willing to help out and do his bit when things need to be done.
We wish Matt all the best in his 100th game.
Go Penno!
